Head Up Displays the Latest Car Trend

 

Ever since GM first put head up displays (HUD's) in it's cars back in 1988, car manufacturers have started putting all sorts of data to be displayed on the windshield via HUD's. This technology wasn't originally made for cars, it was made for airplanes.

 

Back in World War II, HUD's were made so pilots could see all vital information regarding their aircraft without having to look down at any of the dials. Now, HUD's are starting to be seen in the latest car models. Most of the information displayed includes speed, tachometer, and a G-Meter. But now some car companies are going beyond that.

 

Car makers like BMW are now putting their GPS devices as HUD's. This not only looks extremely cool when you're inside, but it makes driving much more safer. With everything from maps to destination info displayed on the windshield, drivers can now keep their eyes on the road without fiddling with the GPS device or looking away from the road.

 

Garmin has now made a GPS device that will act as an HUD and project the GPS display onto the windshield. Of course, the price for this GPS is quite pricey and the software is also quite pricey. HUD's are only available in a select few car models, but for under $130, you can now have your own portable HUD and pretend that you're piloting an aircraft.
