Maserati Birdcage may Become a Reality

 

Back in the 1960's Maserati developed a new way to make their cars lighter. Around 200 steel tubes were welded together to create a tubular space frame chassis. Known as the Birdcage, this made cars like the Tipo 61 not only lighter, but stronger as well.

 

In 2006, a concept of the Birdcage was shown at the LA Auto Show, but was never made into production. The body was made out of carbon fiber with the tubular chassis. The windshield extended almost all the way to the back of the car. The engine was the same V12 that powered the MC12 and the Ferrari Enzo.

 

Inside is more like sitting in a futuristic jet fighter than a car. Instead of an instrument cluster on the dash, everything is presented on a heads up display on the entire windshield. Instead of doors, the top of the car moves forward to allow entry and exits. The one problem is the lack of air conditioning and that the windows don't open. So the jet fighter experience will quickly turn into a giant sauna in a matter of minutes.

 

 

 

No word yet on whether this concept will become a reality, but there is a possibility that the Birdcage may eventually go into production.
