The Superbus: Making Public Transportation Cool

 

For many kids and teenagers, this week was the start of another school year. Time to wake up too early and sit on a boring school bus. Pretty much the same as riding the bus to go to work. But now, the Delft University of Technology is about to change that.

 

Known as the Superbus, this cross between a car, a bus, and a limo will be able to bring students as well as other people around wherever they need to go. It looks like something you'd not only want to ride in, but drive as well. When you open the gullwing doors and step inside, you get a large, luxurious interior with comfortable seats instead of metal walls and benches to sit on.

 

Of course, you do get six-point seat belts which may not be as great as no seatbelts, but you're going to want seatbelts for this ride. Powered by an electric drivetrain, it goes much faster than any other bus or car, but it travels at a safe enough speed that it won't kill you. It also uses sensors to scan the road and can stop to avoid other cars as well as bikes and pedestrians. 

 

The Superbus passed all the highway safety codes last year and is road legal in Europe. We'll just have to wait and see if it travels into our neck of the woods.
