Gumpert is Finally Laid to Rest

Back in 2006, an executive from Audi named Roland Gumpert decided to start his own car company and name it after himself. Now, we all know that most car companies named after their founders rarely survive, but that didn't stop him from trying.

The company only made one car model, but it was a fantastic one. It was called the Apollo and it wasn't the prettiest car, but it did move quite fast and it handled very well.

Over the years, the only thing that changed for the Apollo was the increase in power. When the car first came out, it only had 650 hp. By 2012, the R-version had an insane 860 hp. That's enough power to move a planet out of it's own orbit.

Sadly, lack of sales and spending tons of money building the Apollo saw Gumpert facing bankruptcy in 2013. The company looking to buy Gumpert backed out, leaving the company to lay off it's 19 remaining employees and close up shop for good. Even though the company only made one car, it was something that will definitely be missed. The Apollo was one of the few cars that someone had to drive and gave the driver both fear and excitement at the same time. Not many cars today can do that.
