With many different racing games coming out this week, it's nice to see how far racing games and car games in general have come. Video games do provide hours of entertainment as well as a way for people to forget about the stresses of the real world and go into places they can only imagine. Of course, sometimes it's better to race cars in real life than in video games, but here are five retro games that have provided hours of fun and laughter.
Crazy Taxi (1999) - This game had me wanting to be a taxi driver. What's more fun than driving recklessly around town scaring my passengers?
FlatOut (2004) - One of the most hardcore racing games out there with the best soundtrack. Not to mention the most detailed car damage graphics and if you crash hard enough, the driver flies out of the windshield.
Super Mario Kart (1992) - It may only be go-kart racing, but you can play as your favorite Mario character and you can do many things that regular go-karts can't do.
Cruis'n World (1996) - This was one of the first games where players could race in different parts of the world. The background in all the areas are incredibly accurate and make you feel like you're actually there. You can still play this game at local arcades.
Tomy Turbo (80's) - Before video games became popular, this driving simulator was the toy kids had to have; I even had one in the early 90's. It made real driving sounds, even when you shifted gears. The simulation was simply just a car constantly going straight with no particular destination. It also required four D sized batteries and broke down frequently. This gave you preparation for the future when you got your first car that liked to break down.
